Big Bend National Park encompasses more than 801,000 acres (324,000 ha) of land in the very western tip of Texas. The park is 35 mi (56 km) from Terlingua, running along the Rio Grande and the Mexican border. There are lots of things to do and see, including camping, hiking, birdwatching, boating, visiting the historical towns Castolon and Rio Grande Village, and soaking in the hot springs.

San Elizario Chapel The San Elizario Chapel is one of the stops on the El Paso Mission Trail. This church was re-built around 1830 after being swept away by a flood. The Fort Davis National Historic Site is one of the best preserved forts from the 19th Century. A former military post from 1854 to 1891, it sits on 474 acres (192 ha) of land, and holds fully and partially restored buildings. There are hiking trails and interpretive sites located on the premises.

The Mission Trail is one of the oldest trails in the USA. The trail is 400 years old. There are three missions along the way, one of which is Texas' oldest building. The trail connects the churches of Ysleta, Socorro and San Elizario together. |

Socorro Mission The Socorro Mission is part of the Mission Trail. The mission was founded in 1682 as a Franciscan ministry, but the first structure was washed away during a flood in 1829. Judge Roy Bean Visitor's Center Judge Roy Bean was a well known and eccentric man who was the law in Pecos and Langtry at the end of the 19th century. The Million Barrel Museum combines an old Shell Oil Company tank and a historic home know as the Holman House. The tank was built by the Shell Oil Company in 1928 to hold barrels during the oil boom. The house was originally a hotel and has been refurnished and redecorated to reflect the turn of the 19th century. The goal of the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute and Visitor Center is to get people to be aware of and learn to appreciate this unique area. Hiking tours are offered.
