Founded as a military fort in 1859, Fort Stockton has served as a post for the
9th and 10th Cavalries of the USA Army. The small city is located in the Big
Bend region of central Texas.
In addition to hosting the nation's military, Fort Stockton's economic prosperity
has been reliant on cattle and sheep ranching as well as the oil boom of 1926.
Today, visitors flock to Fort Stockton to explore history and the spectacular
surroundings of Big Bend Country. Historic
Fort Stockton is of particular interest as it incorporates original and reconstructed
military buildings that tell the story of the US Civil War and the Buffalo Soldiers
who fought the Native Americans. The Annie
Riggs Museum tells tales of murder, corrupt politics and archaeological finds,
with a plethora of local history exhibits. The desert garden makes a great venue
for the country and folk concerts that take place during the summer. The balmy
weather is a perfect backdrop for golf and the Pecos
County Municipal Golf Course, located just north of the city. This 18-hole
paradise is home to Blaine McCallister, a top contender for the PGA. Another local
landmark is Ste.
Genevieve Wines, the largest winery in the state, offering signature blends,
Texas Red, Texas White and Texas Blush. In order to appreciate local culture,
visitors can stop by the Grey
Mule Saloon historically described as a vicious place and built by the notorious
Sheriff Royal. The symbol of town spirit is Paisano
Pete, the world's second largest road runner. The 11-foot high (3.4- m) statue
stands proud, watching over Fort Stockton with a welcome sign.
